WASUDEV Joins Stakeholders to Advance Women’s Land Rights in Liberia
Today, Women in Agriculture for Sustainable Development (WASUDEV) joined key stakeholders, advocates, and development partners in an important dialogue focused on women’s land rights in Liberia.
Land remains one of the most critical resources for farmers and a foundation for economic growth, food production, and community development. For women, especially those engaged in agriculture, access to land can mean the difference between poverty and prosperity. Yet across Liberia, many women continue to face significant barriers in owning, accessing, and controlling land.

Why Women’s Land Rights Matter
Women play a central role in Liberia’s agricultural sector. They cultivate crops, support household food security, and contribute greatly to rural economies. Despite their contributions, many women still experience challenges such as:
- Limited ownership rights
- Cultural and traditional restrictions
- Insecure land tenure
- Exclusion from land-related decision-making
- Difficulties accessing legal protections and documentation
Without secure access to land, women farmers often struggle to invest in productivity, access credit, or expand their agricultural activities.
From Policy to Practice
During the dialogue, participants discussed practical ways Liberia can move from policy to practice when it comes to protecting and promoting women’s land rights.
While progress has been made through legal reforms and policy commitments, implementation remains essential. Stakeholders emphasized the need for stronger enforcement of land laws, community awareness, inclusive governance systems, and greater representation of women in land administration processes.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of ensuring that women in rural communities understand their rights and have access to the support systems needed to claim and protect them.

WASUDEV’s Commitment
As an organization committed to empowering women in agriculture and sustainable development, WASUDEV recognizes that secure land rights are directly linked to food security, economic independence, and gender equality.
The organization remains dedicated to advocating for systems that enable women farmers to access productive resources, participate in decision-making, and thrive within Liberia’s agricultural economy.
Appreciation to Organizers
WASUDEV extends sincere thanks to the African Women Leaders Network Liberia for organizing this timely and impactful event.
Creating spaces for dialogue and action is essential to driving meaningful progress and ensuring that women across Liberia can fully benefit from one of the nation’s most valuable resources—land.
