WASUDEV Trains Women in Agribusiness: A Call for Innovation

  • July 24, 2024

Summary:
Women in Agriculture for Sustainable Development (WASUDEV) recently concluded a one-day capacity-building training for women in agriculture in Paynesville City. The event aimed to equip women with the skills and knowledge necessary to become successful agribusiness leaders. The training, held under the theme “Grooming Successful Women Agribusiness Leaders,” attracted participants from Paynesville and Johnsonville.

Key Highlights:

  • Empowerment Focus:
The event emphasized the importance of empowering women in agriculture to enhance food production and improve economic conditions in Liberia. Deputy Gender Minister, Madam Alice Johnson-Howard, encouraged women to actively participate in agriculture and leverage their skills for innovation.
  • Economic Opportunities:
Dr. Cheryl A. Williams, Gender and Social Development Specialist at the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted the critical need for economic empowerment among women. She urged participants to take advantage of grant opportunities available at the Ministry of Agriculture to strengthen their agricultural activities.
  • WASUDEV’s Role:
The organization’s founder, Madam Hawa Dunor Varney, stressed the significant role women play in agriculture and the need for capacity-building initiatives. She pointed out the barriers women face, such as limited access to land, information, finance, and markets, and emphasized the importance of addressing these challenges.
  • Training Objectives:
The workshop aimed to provide women with the tools to succeed in agribusiness, including knowledge in entrepreneurship, opportunity identification, value creation, risk management, and financial literacy. The event brought together thirty participants, including small-scale farmers, business owners, and university students, to foster innovative ideas for societal improvement.
